Basant: Lebanon should take proactive steps to dismantle the financial networks of Iran and Hezbollah

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant, in a meeting with Nawaf Salam, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, and Yassin Jaber, the Minister of Finance of this country, in Washington on Monday, the 6th of Mahar (September 28), asked the Lebanese leaders to take "preventive measures" to dismantle the financial groups of the Islamic Republic.

According to the report published by the US Treasury Department at this meeting, Besant also emphasized the need for rapid reforms in the Lebanese financial sector in order to "restore confidence in Lebanon's damaged banking system."

These statements are made in a situation where Beirut is trying to renew negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and get the support of the World Bank. In this context, the Office of the Prime Minister of Lebanon announced that Nauf Salam, emphasizing the progress in banking reforms in this country, asked the United States to assist Lebanon in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and in the broader process of economic recovery.
