NBC, citing three American officials, reported that eight American Marines were injured in Iran's ground attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz on September 14 (Shahrivar 23). The report stated that these Marines were not severely injured as a result of the Iranian cruise missile strike on the ship, but in addition to smoke inhalation, they exhibited symptoms of concussion, including headaches.

According to NBC, these Marines were not on a US Navy warship during the incident, but US officials did not specify what type of vessel it was. All eight American service members returned to duty shortly after the incident.
