Trade sources and analysts told Reuters that ship-to-ship transfers of oil in the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz had reached capacity after Saudi Arabia replaced its exports from the Red Sea with other forms.

According to their assessment, the increase in Saudi Arabia's exports this month requires more tankers to transfer crude oil from ship to ship through the Strait of Hormuz.

This has reduced vessel availability, increased shipping costs and extended the amount of time cargoes remain in the water before reaching refineries.

In the ship-to-ship oil transfer system, several vessels are placed next to each other, connected by ropes and pipes and form a sort of floating bridge. This round-trip process reduces the distance each ship has to travel, but it is a complicated and expensive temporary measure.
