Oil prices fell in trading on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump described the meeting between representatives of Washington and Tehran on the sidelines of the United Nations as "very good".

Brent crude oil, the international oil price index, reached $41.98 a barrel in afternoon trade in Asian markets.

The main index of American oil, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), also fell to $23.89 per barrel.

Both indices traded below the symbolic level of $100; The border has been breached several times since the start of the war in the Middle East in February.

Trump told reporters that the talks between the American representatives and Iran lasted three hours and were "very good" and "very productive".

He also said that the two sides were going to hold another meeting "in the very near future."

Trump's words about the talks with Iran came just hours after his harsh speech at the United Nations.
