The European Union extended the sanctions against Russia for another three years

According to the reports of several European media, the member states of the European Union have for the first time extended their sanctions against Russia at once for a period of three years.

So far, punitive measures have been re-approved against about three thousand people and organizations every six months. The previous deadline was supposed to end at midnight on September 22.

The agreement planned last night was blocked by Latvia at the last minute. The reason for this was the removal of the names of two Russian billionaires from the sanctions list.

According to EU diplomats, the Latvian government abstained in the final vote.

France and Slovakia in particular put pressure on the lifting of sanctions on these two Russian billionaires. Meanwhile, France called this issue a matter of "national security" without going into public details.
