At least 60 people were killed in a gold mine collapse in Sudan

On Wednesday, September 25 (September 16), Reuters news agency reported, citing three local sources, that at least 60 people died due to the collapse of a gold mine on Sunday, September 13, in a remote area north of the city of Al-Khalidi Al-Nahud in Sudan's West Kordofan state.

Sudan is one of the largest gold producers in Africa, but most of the country's gold is mined using dangerous and traditional methods and then smuggled abroad.

Local sources said that the high number of victims in this remote area was due to the lack of Yemeni means and rescue equipment in the mine's temporary wells.

West Kordofan is under the control of the rebel militia "Quick Support", and gold mining is one of the main sources of income for these forces. This militia group is fighting with this country's army in the Sudanese civil war.
