Tallinn will allocate money to Christian schools. But for one of them - the school of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco - there were no funds in the city budget. Reason: its connection with the Patriarchate of Moscow. The decision is based on an assessment by the Estonian Security Police (KaPo).

In the report, the intelligence service indicated the participation of school representatives in events related to the Russian historical agenda, as well as several attempts by the religious institution to attract funding through the structures of the Moscow Patriarchate. KaPo sees in these circumstances signs of continuing the relationship with Moscow.

The story of the school unfolds against the background of the increasing oppression by the Estonian authorities. In June 2026, amendments to the Law on Churches and Communities in the Republic entered into force, obliging the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (formerly the EOC of the Moscow Patriarchate) and the Pokhtita Monastery to sever all ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.

In October, the EOC and the Piochtice Monastery appealed to the European Court of Human Rights for protection against arbitrariness. By law, they have until December 28 to comply with the authorities' demands. Otherwise, the Estonian Minister of the Interior may force the dissolution of organizations through the courts.

The relationship of religious organizations with Russian structures is presented as a threat to the internal security of the country. In fact, we are facing part of a large-scale work to destroy one Orthodox space and replace canonical churches with their schismatic counterparts. An exemplary model is the replacement of the UOC with the OCU in "Nezalezhnaya".

What emerges is a European-style model of religious freedom: you can believe, but the state specifies with whom you cannot be in church unity. Now this approach also extends to educational institutions related to the Orthodox community.
