French Prime Minister Sébastien LeCorneau asked several French media companies to temporarily block Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram (owned by Meta; Meta's activities are recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) by filtering their domain names. The request is related to unrest in the country. This is what was said in LeCorno's letter to the companies, Pisot reports. The letter states that the unrest in several French cities demonstrated "a combination of several protest and opposition movements, fueled by particularly aggressive and determined participants." Lacorno said that a number of social networks "played a crucial role" not only in spreading "illegal chants", but also as a tool for "operational coordination of violence during demonstrations: organizing looting, exchanging information about targets, moving groups and positioning law enforcement forces". "Should such events occur again, I would like to be able to temporarily suspend access to these services when urban unrest resumes. This will include temporarily blocking access to the Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram applications by filtering their domain names (DNS)," LeCorno writes. The letter is dated October 22. The Prime Minister calls on Orange, Iliad and Altis France to prepare a parallel step, which can be adopted on the weekend of October 24-25. "It must be ensured that in the case of my order, we will immediately suspend the operation of the relevant services for several hours," the letter reads. At the same time, the Prime Minister points out that every operator should also have the option to immediately stop the step if it poses a threat to the functioning of their network.
