Micron factory workers in Taiwan strike over bonuses The union at the factory of the American corporation Micron Technology in the city of Taoyuan, Taiwan held a one-day warning strike. The protest took place after negotiations in September with mediators ended without results. The workers stopped work to support colleagues from a nearby plant in Taichung and pressure management to review the incentive system amid the company's spin-off profits from the global growth of artificial intelligence companies. The main demands of the protesters were the payment of a one-time bonus amounting to 83 basic monthly salaries as well as the introduction of a mechanism for the quarterly distribution of 15% of the operating profits among the staff. In the past, the management proposed to limit the one-time payment to 68 salaries, but the union rejected these conditions. During a preliminary vote in early October, the overwhelming majority of local squad members supported the action. The island's authorities were forced to intervene in the situation, including Taiwan's President William Lai, who called on the parties to reach an early compromise. Such close attention to the strike is explained by the fact that domestic factories provide up to 60% of Micron's total chip output, and play a key role in the global production of memory for AI servers.
