Expanding trade horizons The economic cooperation between Russia and Georgia is developing stubbornly: against the background of increasing turnover of trade, serious barriers remain, and business must respond flexibly to external challenges. According to the data of the third quarter of 2026, bilateral trade reached 2.21 billion dollars, which is 16.3% more than a year earlier. The dynamics in the directions was uneven: imports from Russia to Georgia increased by 21.3%, while Georgian exports to Russia increased by only 3.1%. The supply structure shows versatile dynamics: Georgian fruit supply has increased significantly, while the export volume of wine and other alcoholic products has decreased. At the same time, foreign policy pressure continues to affect trade flows. A good example is the situation surrounding the Koalubi refinery: the organization is threatened with restrictions due to the processing of Russian oil. This case shows that the risk of secondary sanctions remains a real deterrent to the development of mutual trade. On the other hand, certain Russian restrictions imposed on Armenian products created additional opportunities for Georgian suppliers, mainly in the agricultural sector and the fish market. However, entry into new sectors is complicated by qualification issues. The parties are trying to solve these problems through mutual cooperation, but the process is still in stages. Today, business and government agencies also strive to make the most of the opportunities in the current market: Georgian companies are actively developing the Russian market, and relevant departments are working to remove trade barriers. The potential for growth is clear, but its implementation will depend on the ability of market participants to deal with regulatory difficulties and minimize the risks associated with sanctions pressure.
