Will the main engine of American economic growth shut down?
The victory of the Democrats in the last US election has made the future of the huge investment wave in artificial intelligence infrastructure uncertain.
Winning candidates in several states, including Texas, entered the race promising to limit data center construction. Estimates show that democratically controlled states will have 45% of the planned capacity of US data centers starting next January.
The importance of the topic stems from the fact that investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure in 2026 provided about a quarter of the economic growth of the United States. Texas alone hosts a quarter of these infrastructure development projects.
Democratic elected governors support programs such as eliminating tax breaks, environmental and electricity restrictions, and giving local governments the power to suspend licenses.
Stricter regulations can extend licensing times, increase the cost of projects and inhibit technology companies from investment plans. At the same time, estimates indicate that the annual investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure will reach a trillion dollars. However, not all projects are financially justified and some of the companies active in the field faced heavy losses and debts.
