The Chinese consul general reprimanded the American official.
Daniel Elliott, a Republican politician who serves as Indiana State Treasurer, received a letter from the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago objecting to his participation in an event by the Ministry of Economy and Culture in Taipei and advising him to avoid further contact with Taiwanese authorities.
The official replied: I reject any suggestion that the political demands of a foreign government should determine the lawful conduct of an Indiana official. Beijing can send as many letters as it wants. The Chinese Communist Party is not dictating to Indiana officials how they should do their jobs. Indiana's legitimate economic engagement with Taiwan is to Indiana's benefit and will continue.
Chinese threat.
