US President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff, in a move that reflects a trend of escalating political conflict during the last two years of his tenure, according to Reuters.
The decision comes after Republicans lost the midterm elections and Democrats took control of Congress.
Miller is known for his strictness on immigration, despite the drop in Americans' support for Trump's policies on this issue from 50% to 37%.
Officials expect Trump to increase his reliance on executive orders, increase pressure on Republicans and reduce corporate influence inside the White House.
Outwardly, Miller opposes prolonging the war with Iran despite his strong support for Israel, while Roger Stone, a Trump ally, described him as his "wartime adviser."
