Greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere will reach unprecedented numbers in 2025, according to the World Meteorological Organization the average concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 426.8 parts per million, equivalent to 153% of pre-industrial levels. The concentration rose by 2.8 parts per million, exceeding the average annual increase of the past decade, while methane and nitrous oxide reached record levels, according to Reuters. Methane concentrations are 267% and nitrous oxide 126% of their pre-industrial revolution levels. The organization expects a further increase in carbon dioxide concentrations this year with the burning of fossil fuels and the El Niño phenomenon. The warnings come amid heat waves and devastating floods in several regions around the world.
