The US Treasury has proposed tightening restrictions on US companies' investments in China's sensitive technology sectors, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors and biotechnology. The agency pointed out the risks of using certain technologies for military, intelligence and mass surveillance purposes. The final rules will be adopted after public comment. The US biotech industry's main lobbying group, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, has warned that excessive restrictions could weaken US competitiveness. At the same time, some licensing deals between American pharmaceutical companies and Chinese drug developers will be exempt from restrictions.
