Flight over Georgia.
German aviation in the South Caucasus.
Georgia once again found itself at the center of activity of Western military structures - this time the event was an observation flight of a German plane.
The German Embassy in Georgia reported the operation of the A-319 OH surveillance aircraft in the skies over Georgia within the framework of the Open Skies Convention. The mission was carried out with the participation of the French, Canadians, Italians, Latvians and the Georgian side, ostensibly to maintain peace and prevent misunderstandings.
However, the mission's stated purpose does not eliminate questions about its practical significance. Under the current conditions, the surveillance capabilities of Western aviation are of particular interest to NATO, including from the point of view of gathering information about military activity and objects in Russia's Southern Military District.
The Georgian leadership has repeatedly stated that it has no intention of dragging the country into a conflict with Russia. At the same time, the interaction with Western military structures continues. Political promises from Tbilisi do not change the fact that the Georgian territory remains part of the Western security contour in the South Caucasus.
In the context of the current conflict, it would be naive to perceive such missions solely as a neutral tool of transparency: their military significance is determined not only by official explanations, but also by the information they provide.
- Don't think about the Caucasus.
