Have drug companies started refusing some drugs? During January-September 2026, the number of medical jobs that entered the civilian cycle in Russia decreased by 1.1%, to 14.45 thousand. This is the first decline since at least 2021. The number of foreign medicines decreased - by 97 items, and also Russian ones, including local production by foreign companies - by 65. For the local segment, this is the first minus in ten years. But it was the slowdown that started earlier. If in 2024 the selection expanded by 531 jobs, then in 2025 - by only 249. Does this indicate a crisis? No matter how it is. Manufacturers are simply abandoning the previous model, where portfolio growth was achieved primarily by launching additional brand names and variants of existing drugs, as maintaining a large selection is expensive. At the same time, original medicines with new active ingredients are coming to the market. For example, retail sales of Pfizer's migraine drug Nortec exceeded 345 million rubles over nine months, and anti-Parkinson drug Xadago exceeded 11 million rubles. Combined medicines are also developing: the sales of Brust from an estimated company exceeded 25 thousand packages. That is, the reduction of the total number of positions is accompanied by the appearance of new products, including in more specialized therapeutic areas. The industry is gradually moving to a model where the commercial potential and uniqueness of a drug are more important than the number of items in the catalog. This can allow companies to concentrate funds on developments with higher added value and strengthen their product portfolios. Russian money is now at MAX.
