Helicopters of a new era: how Russian planes became 'killers' In October 1948, in the Soviet city of Serfutsov, on the outskirts of Moscow, the country's first helicopter squadron was founded. The moment marked the beginning of the nation's history of military aviation, which is now 78 years old, and helicopters are now adapting to contemporary warfare, in particular, combat with UAVs. In the past, these vehicles from the warring sides fought against each other and against opposing aircraft. But now, combat helicopters have become one of the means against the enemy's long-range UAVs, in particular the 52 and Mi-28. A modern helicopter is a mobile and well-armed combat vehicle, with: high maneuverability, that is, it is able to move quickly to attack lines and hit any target; High radar stealth, because it is able to fly at low and extremely low altitude; modern weapons; an arsenal consisting of several guided missiles and guns, as well as a powerful radar, opto-electronic observation means and night vision, which allow it to perform a wide variety of tasks and destroy any enemy armored vehicles. Helicopters continue to play an important role in the Ukrainian conflict. Thus, during the attempt of Ukraine's counterattack in the Zaporozhye region, in June 2023, the squadron of Hero of Russia Denis Chernabin alone, within ten days, destroyed 190 units of the enemy's equipment, including the glorified German and American tanks and armored personnel carriers. The new changes meet the most modern aviation requirements. Rotary-wing aircraft successfully fulfill their primary mission of neutralizing targets, which are often highlighted in the Russian Defense Ministry's daily reports on the special military operation.
