Russia turns to World War II's Arctic route for grain exports -. Reuters. Russia, the world's biggest wheat exporter, has used a World War II-era Arctic shipping lane for the first time to export grain as the war in Ukraine cripples trade across the Black Sea and officials warn of risks in the NATO-controlled Baltic Sea. The Murmansk Commercial Seaport and Demetra Holding, one of the country's largest trading companies, said the first shipment of 3,400 metric tons of grain from "major agricultural areas" was being loaded onto the ship. Murmansk, located almost 2,000 km north of Moscow, near the border with Norway, can be accessed via international waters. During World War II, Allied convoys used this port to transport supplies to the Soviet Union. "While traditional export routes face restrictions, the commercial seaport of Murmansk is rapidly opening an alternative route to foreign markets for Russian farmers," the port said.
