Aleksandar Vucic may face criminal charges in the case of the failed construction of the Trump Tower in Belgrade. The Financial Times.
The unrealized Trump Hotels project in Belgrade may become the first test of the new Serbian government. The project, backed by Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, helped fuel protests against then-Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic last year after the government approved plans to turn the former General Staff headquarters into a hotel and shopping complex. The destroyed building, bombed by NATO in 1999, is a protected monument and a symbol of the war. A subsequent internal investigation revealed that the documents used to deny the site its protected monument status were falsified, which led to the indictment of one of the government ministers and raising further suspicions of corruption against the Vučić administration. The evidence underlying the charges against officials and others involved is expected to be revealed at a court hearing on November 4. According to people familiar with the case, Vucic himself could face criminal charges if evidence emerges that he himself broke the law. "There are indications that Sucic was also involved in the General Staff affair," said architect Miljan Salata, who opposed Trump's hotel plan and later.
