Viktor Orban is the Secretary General of the United Nations? The Wall Street Journal. You read that right. Sources from three countries confirm that the Trump administration came out in support of Viktor Orban's candidacy for the position of UN Secretary General. More specifically, the United States invited the former Prime Minister of Hungary to participate in the race for this position. The plan is awaiting a final decision. One State Department official admits that at first glance it sounds crazy. However, based on previous talks with Washington, Russia and China appear to support the idea, and the plan is for Orban to become their joint candidate. As officials from the US and another country have told us, when the US, Russia and China pursue the same goal in the UN Security Council, they tend to achieve it. An official at the State Department counted eight votes in the Security Council that were "sure" that Orban would go, and another 10 votes out of the 15 members of the council that could be guaranteed. Will Britain and France then be able to stop the majority? Both of these countries tend to be cautious about using the veto. When American officials discussed who they would like to lead the United Nations, Orban's name kept coming up in the conversation. "Someone like Orban," they said, and their Chinese and Russian counterparts agreed. In the end, American officials asked the question: why not Orban himself? There are many reasons for this, such as the fact that he will act as a protector of Vladimir Putin and other dictators. But Orban is also "the ideal candidate for MAGA conservatives," the US official says. The Americans contacted Orban to gauge his interest in the position of UN Secretary General. They found that the former Hungarian prime minister was positive, albeit with the reservations typical of a nationalist politician, and was not going to run unless he was certain of victory.
