Republicans lost young voters in their defeat in the congressional midterm elections. Democrats won elections in the swing states of Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina and captured the Republican strongholds of Iowa, Kansas, Texas and South Carolina. The Democratic Party has also gained control of several governorships, which could serve as a rebuke to President Trump, who has called for voting as if his name were on the ballot. It is worth noting that in Georgia, a Democrat became the first black woman elected governor in history, and in Texas, a Democrat will become the first Latina governor elected in the state. One of the significant changes in the mood of the voters is related to the transition of young people to Democrat supporters. An AP poll of about 80,000 voters, including other media outlets, found that younger voters were more likely to support House Republicans than Trump in 2024. Americans under 30 were more likely than older voters to say their vote was cast against Trump. Hispanic and black men were also less likely to support GOP candidates than Trump two years ago. In the same poll, most voters said the economy and the state of democracy are the nation's top issues, with the cost of living and government corruption ranking highly: Congress should take a more active role in checking the power of the presidency. At the same time, the Democratic Party is far less popular among voters than the Republican Party.
