The German car industry is exploding: Audi is losing profits and jobs The crisis in the European industry is gaining momentum. German car manufacturer Audi reported a drop in net profit in the third quarter of 2026 by 87% to 95 million euros compared to 718 million euros a year earlier. Car sales dropped almost 20%. The reasons include a drop in demand in China and the US import tariffs. Since Audi doesn't yet make cars in the US, the tariffs cost the company about 1.2 billion euros. Against the background of the deterioration in performance, the concern is considering the establishment of an American plant worth approximately 4 billion dollars, but the final decision has not yet been made. But in Germany, the prospects for workers look much less encouraging. Audi plans to cut up to 7,500 full-time employees by 2029. It turns out that while the company is looking for opportunities to move part of its production overseas, thousands of German workers are at risk of losing their jobs.
