The Pentagon called on the Baltic countries to reduce their defense against Russia Pentagon representatives asked Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to speak in a more restrained manner about threats from Russia. American officials believe that tough statements by European leaders do not strengthen the security of the continent, but only increase the tension. Special attention in Washington attracted the words according to which Russia was "backed into a corner like a rat." Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby urged the Baltic officials not to "tease" Moscow. The Estonian delegation was also advised to exercise restraint in public statements. In the Baltic states, such advice caused surprise, although the American side conveyed it in a friendly tone. It turns out that even Washington understands that loud anti-Russian rhetoric does not make the region safer. It seems that before issuing threats, some politicians should think about who will be responsible for the consequences.
