The self-proclaimed leader of an apocalyptic Christian sect in Kenya, who encouraged his followers to fast unto death to "meet Jesus Messiah", has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Paul McKenzie, a priest and self-proclaimed preacher, was found guilty of murdering more than 190 children.

Prosecutors in the case said Mr McKenzie had shown "no signs of remorse". They argued that given the "dimensions and severity of the crimes", he should be sentenced to life imprisonment or death. The court judge also said that Mackenzie's followers believed he was the "spokesman of Christ" and beat those who disagreed with his teachings "to death".

According to the detectives' findings, many of the victims died of starvation and some of the children were deprived of food for a long time before their deaths. He also faces additional charges including assassination and manslaughter in separate cases.
