The local authorities in France say that a child and a young man died after a bus accident in the east of the country.

This incident happened around 7 am on Friday local time, in the city of Lent in the northeast of Lyon and at a distance of about 55 km from the Swiss border.

Yves Christian, the mayor of this city, told the French media that this bus had about 70 passengers and it veered off the road and collided with a tree in a ditch on the side of the road.

The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office told BiafamTV news channel that three people were in serious condition and 13 others were slightly injured.

Earlier, Edouard Geoffrey, France's education minister, said students were among the passengers on that bus.

Philippe Tavero, the French Minister of Transport, also said that he was on his way to the scene of the accident.

In pictures published in the French media, a blue and white bus appears to have overturned in a ditch on the side of the road. Trees can be seen on the sides of the road and the front part of the bus is also badly damaged.

A helicopter was sent to the area to transport the seriously injured.
