Socialist Democratic candidate Nitya Raman defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral election.
Raman's victory surprised political observers in California; He entered the election race when he didn't have much of a chance against Boss. Bass is an infiltrating figure in the field of politics, who was previously a representative of the US Congress and has never lost any election race for political office.
Mrs. Raman has often been compared to Haran Mamdani, the mayor of New York. Both are democratic socialists and they entered the elections with progressive programs and the support of progressive voters, mainly young people.
With Raman's victory, two major American cities are now run by democratic socialists; A trend to which several famous American political figures belong, including Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Los Angeles and its surrounding satellite areas host the largest community of Iranian immigrants.
