Again, Iran played an important role in the American election.

🖋 Jyar Gol, senior correspondent for international affairs of the BBC.

On this day, 47 years ago, students following the Imam's line occupied the American embassy in Tehran and took American diplomats hostage. A crisis that lasted 444 days and contributed to the defeat of Jimmy Carter against Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election.

Almost half a century ago, Iran released American hostages just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president on January 20, 1981.

Iran once again influenced the US internal elections.

The war with Iran, along with the sharp increase in energy prices and the increase in the cost of living, resulted in the heavy defeat of the Republicans in the US mid-term elections, and the Democrats took control of both houses of Congress. Now the Iranian government may be hoping that by taking control of Congress, Democrats will limit Donald Trump's ability to launch another massive military operation against Iran.

Although the US Congress can curb the president's powers by limiting the budget and challenging the president's decisions, Donald Trump still has broad powers in the field of military operation and foreign policy as the commander-in-chief of the militant armed forces and can veto many decisions of the congress.
