From former model to Paralympic athlete and news anchor; Candidates competing for victory in Iowa.

Jack Gloop.

BBC reporter in Des Moines, Iowa.

Iowa is another state where the traditional and old Republican base is in danger of being lost.

Donald Trump won three consecutive presidential elections in this country by a significant margin. Iowa hasn't fielded a Democratic candidate for the Senate since 2008 and hasn't elected a Democratic governor since 2007.

But Donald Trump's trade tariffs have increased costs for the country's farmers who depend on imported goods and inputs for their operations. The war with Iran also hurt Iowans by raising the price of diesel.

Who is running in this election?

Race for governor: Democratic candidate Rob Sand, a former model and current state auditor of Iowa, faces Republican candidate Zach Lann. Zach Lann is a farmer whose family has lived in Iowa for six generations. He defeated an opponent backed by Donald Trump to win the Republican Party nomination.

◾Senate elections: Democratic candidate Josh Turk, the former Paralympic basketball player and currently a representative of the state assembly, competes with Ashley Hinson. Hinson previously served as a television news anchor and has been in the US House of Representatives since 2021.

Ashley Hinson has the support of Donald Trump, but after the start of the war with Iran, he criticized the US president's decision to enter this war.

The outcome of the Senate race in Iowa could single-handedly change the balance of power in the US Congress.
