The refrigerators and freezers of dozens of supermarkets in seven European countries were the target of a cyber ground attack. About 40 Deleuze supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were affected by this ground attack, but the number of stores was less in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland.

Subcobel, the Belgian manufacturer that some of its refrigerators were targeted in a ground attack, said the evaporators [coolant] of those devices were switched to the defrost mode, causing them to heat up. It is believed to be the same method that targeted hundreds of supermarkets in France in October. Local media reported at the time that millions of euros worth of food had been thrown away.

Stephan Mullens, CEO of Subcobel, which manages Dell's systems, told the Belga news agency on Monday that the incident was a ground-based cyber attack and that the company had been working "all night and into the morning" to disconnect the affected devices from the network.
