UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' term ends on December 31, 2026, and Turkey has joined the race to choose his replacement.
Turkey, which announced its candidacy on October 31, is counting on Feridon Sinarlioglu, the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
The process of determining the candidates, which began at the end of 2025, is now entering the final stages. Turkey's nomination letter was submitted on October 30, immediately after the end of the seventh round of voting.
