Democratic Senator: Trump administration's plan to attack Iran again on the ground is "insane."
Chris Murphy, the US Democratic Senator, sharply criticized the Donald Trump administration's possible plan to renew military operations against Iran, describing this plan as "insane" and warning that its implementation could lead to an escalation and a destructive expansion of the war.
Mr. Murphy said Thursday at a meeting at the Middle East Institute in Washington that during the briefing sessions, he had the opportunity to learn about the details of the US government's military plan for possible new attacks on Iran.
Senator Murphy said that the plan prepared to resume military operations is likely based on short-term attacks, but its implications could be much wider.
He said: "I'm just saying their plan is crazy."
Mr. Murphy added that the implementation of this plan "will lead to a devastating escalation of the war and, most likely, to the destruction of our commitment to the rule of law." In response to a question about the details of this plan, Mr. Murphy pointed to published reports about the possibility of attacking Iran's civilian infrastructure.
Chris Murphy said that Donald Trump has asked officials to prepare a plan for a new military operation, but it is unclear how much the planners themselves believe in its success.
He emphasized that, in his opinion, the implementation of such a plan would not only bring about a quick end to the conflicts, but would make the war longer and more intense.
