The Revolutionary Guards say that three oil tankers that violated Iran's regulations caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz due to hitting a mine.
The Revolutionary Guards Navy's public relations announcement states that these tankers "turned off their radar and navigation systems and tried to leave the unauthorized southern passage of the Strait of Hormuz, ignoring the warnings of the Revolutionary Guards Navy, when they hit a naval mine and exploded."
The name, flag and ownership of these tankers and the status of their crews are still unknown, and the claim that the three tankers collided with mines has not been independently confirmed. But the British Naval Operations Center announced that it had received a report of a fire on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to this maritime security body's statement, the captain of a vessel reported at 3:00 a.m. Thursday, Greenwich time, that he saw another vessel on fire, 9 nautical miles north of Hassab in Oman.
