The Egyptian parliament has authorized the country's military to provide support for the defense of Saudi Arabia. Last week, the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah Sisi, asked the country's parliament to agree to the request for assistance from the "Egyptian Arab Union" to fight the Houthis. This decision could bring Cairo directly into the regional conflicts that have widened with the escalation of Yemen's Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. Egypt has repeatedly condemned the attacks by Iran or the groups supported by it against the Persian Gulf countries, but so far it has not publicly participated in direct battles and has not joined the "Mecca Defense Alliance". Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty and the head of Egypt's intelligence agency, Hassan Rashad, traveled to Riyadh last Wednesday to deliver Mr. Sisi's letter to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In this letter, Mr. Sisi emphasized that Egypt's support will be limited only to the defense of the territory and borders of Saudi Arabia and will not include the attack on Yemen. After this meeting, Mr. Abdul Ati emphasized that Egypt wants to take advantage of "all opportunities" to resolve the conflict in Yemen through diplomacy.
