Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, the left-wing president of Brazil, was elected president for the fourth time after defeating his right-wing opponent, Flavio Bolsonaro, in a close and tense election.
Based on the results announced by Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court, Lula won the presidency for a fourth non-consecutive term by winning 51.8 percent of the vote to his opponent's 48.2 percent. Flavio Bolsonaro has not yet come to terms with his defeat.
This victory is historic because Lula is the first Brazilian presidential candidate since the return of democracy in the 1980s to win the second round despite losing in the first round.
