Aleksandar Vucic, the leader of Serbia, who has been in power in that country for the past 14 years, was defeated in the parliamentary elections on Sunday.
Mr. Vucic, who had just stepped down as president, had planned to return to power in Sunday's election as a prime ministerial candidate, but faced an opposition coalition formed around the student boycott movement.
This movement began after the collapse of the concrete canopy of the train station in the city of Novi Sad in 2024, in which 16 people were killed, and gradually turned into a widespread movement against the government.
The unprecedented participation of voters in the elections was the first sign of the opposition's success.
The defeat of Vucic and his party is also a blow to Moscow; Russia has counted on him as one of its allies in Europe for years.
