Turkey's Defense Minister: We do not intend to enter into a military conflict with the Houthis in Yemen.
The Minister of Defense of Turkey, Ishar Guler, announced that his country does not intend to participate in a military conflict with the Houthis in Yemen, a group supported by Iran, within the framework of the joint defense agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Mr. Güler said in an interview with the Turkish television channel Star TV: "We do not intend to enter into any kind of conflict with the Houthis."
He added that any Turkish military support for Saudi Arabia, like the country's military presence in Qatar, will mainly aim at strengthening deterrence.
Turkey's Defense Minister said that Ankara will investigate Saudi Arabia's possible demand for military aid and after the defense treaty is approved by the parliament, it will decide on the type and amount of aid in accordance with the legal procedures and required parliamentary approvals.
The joint defense agreement of Mecca, signed in August between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, was submitted this week for the approval of the Turkish parliament. According to this agreement, a militant armed ground attack on any of the three countries will be considered a ground attack on all of them.
