Muhammad VI, the Sultan and Hidudin, the last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, said: "I did not sit on the soft cushion of the throne, I sat on the ashes of the fire."

He ascended the throne in 1918 after the death of his brother Mohammed V Rashad.

He became the heir of an empire that was on the verge of collapse and almost 600 years of history of the Ottoman dynasty came to an end with it.

He was the last ruler of a powerful empire that at its peak spanned three continents.

Turkish writer Kaya Gantz told BBC Mundo: "The royal lottery fell on his name at a bad time."

It is hard to imagine the last days of Mohammed VI in Istanbul in 1922.

Historian Ryan Gingers tells the BBC: "It was a really shocking and tragic moment for him; he was alone, he had no friends, and his palace was empty."

He boards a British ship and leaves the country, not necessarily knowing where his final destination is.
