According to the state media in Russia, the president of the country, Vladimir Putin, said that he agreed to the release of an American citizen imprisoned in Russia.
He is accused of fighting for Ukraine.
Mr Putin said during a meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg that Stephen Hubbard had been transferred to Pulkovo Airport.
Mr. Hubbard, of Michigan, was sentenced in 2024, when he was 72, to serve nearly seven years in prison.
The prosecutors accused him of serving in a defense unit in the city of Isium in the east of the city two years ago, when he was captured by Russian forces.
The United States State Department previously listed him among those "unlawfully detained."
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said he had raised the issue of Mr Hubbard's case with Vladimir Putin.
