The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia overturned the death sentence of a Sri Lankan migrant worker who was accused and convicted of insulting Islam and the Prophet of Islam for his Facebook comments. This news was announced by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka. The case caused a wave of concern in Sri Lanka and led to widespread diplomatic and legal efforts to overturn his death sentence. The incident began at the end of June this year, after a video was widely published on social media in which a Muslim youth kicked a dog traveling with Hindu pilgrims in Sri Lanka. The release of this video sparked religious debates on social media. During these arguments, one of the users posted an insulting comment about a Hindu deity, and Anujan responded by writing an article in Tamil about the Prophet of Islam, which was considered offensive. He deleted his post shortly after and apologized for his comments by posting a video. However, a photo of his Facebook post reached his employer and the Saudi authorities and he was arrested.
