The Houthis' warning is intended to aggravate the psychological and economic consequences of Saudi Arabia

Hisham Shawish - Correspondent of the Middle East section of BBC Monitoring

This morning we saw that the Houthis warned the people against using the airports and airspace of Saudi Arabia.

This new warning shows that the Houthis' threats to Saudi civil aviation are part of the pressure campaign on Saudi Arabia; The campaign aimed at forcing this country to end the siege of areas controlled by the Houthis in Yemen.

The main purpose of such warnings is to intensify the psychological and economic consequences. So far we have seen the cancellation or delay of hundreds of airline flights. Therefore, these warnings have a significant impact.

This situation will also increase the concern of travelers and insurance companies. Thus, the purpose of these warnings is to defer widespread damages beyond physical harm. We will probably see an increase in diplomatic efforts so that countries will defend the attacks and escalation of tensions by the Houthis against Saudi airports, or provide the ground for the intervention of Pakistan and Turkey. Two other countries that signed together with Saudi Arabia on the Makkah Treaty, a joint defense agreement.
