The speech of Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State of the United States, in front of the Acropolis building in Athens and the reference of the Revolutionary Guards to the Achaemenids and Xerxes who burned there and destroyed his temples, led to the interception and anger of famous historians and Iranologists, as well as government officials and social media users; They say Mr. Rubio was trying to justify bombing Iran.
The American Secretary of State, who traveled to Greece during his trip to the three NATO member states, also warned that "Western civilization is in danger of decline" and asked European countries to return to the "values of ancient Greece" and help America.
This is not the first time that the statements of American government officials about the "threat to Iranian civilization" provoke reactions.
Toraj Maria, a prominent Iranian-American historian and Iranologist, told BBC Persian that what Mr. Rubio is trying to do is to justify America's actions and that Iran's bombing is because Xerxes burned Athens 480 years ago. 📷EPA/Shutterstock/NurPhoto via Getty
