The French news agency wrote in a report from the Tajrish market in Tehran that the sharp increase in prices and the decrease in purchasing power greatly reduced the sales of many stores.
A dry fruit seller told this news agency that customers who used to buy two to five kilos, now settle for half a kilo or one kilo. He said businesses need exchange rate stability more than anything else.
According to official statistics, Iran's annual inflation reached nearly 90% in September and food prices more than doubled compared to last year. The value of the riyal on the open market rose from about 1 million 700 thousand tomans against the dollar before the war to about 2 million 700 thousand tomans.
Other sellers also said about the sharp drop in customers and empty warehouses. A 45-year-old woman told Agence France-Presse that she now sometimes goes to the market just to "look at the shops" and has lost the ability to buy many goods and even travel. A repairman also says that the number of his customers has dropped to about 11 and many people have removed buying clothes, going to restaurants and entertainment from their lives.
