Mahmoud Abbas postponed the elections until next year
Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, postponed the elections to the Legislative Assembly from November 28 (Azar 7) to September 11, 2027 (20 Besharib 1406).
The elections to determine the head of the Palestinian Authority will be held on the same day.
According to the official Wafa news agency, Mr. Abbas' decision to postpone the parliamentary elections and set a new date for the presidential elections was made "in the shadow of military attacks on prisoners and the expansion of settlements."
In the statement of Mr. Abbas, the restrictions on the release of movement, security, economic and administrative challenges to the preparation and holding of elections are among the reasons for this decision.
The last elections for the Palestinian Legislative Assembly were held in 2006, which resulted in the victory of Hamas. This controversial election caused a deep rift between Fatah and Hamas.
Mr. Abbas won the elections for the head of the organization a year earlier and since then he has remained as the head of the Palestinian organization with the extension of his term.
