The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the prize will be awarded to Pili for his "efforts to promote international peace and justice".

Originally from Durban, South Africa, Navi Pillai presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for the Rwandan Genocide from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.
