The former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nabantham "Navi" Pillai won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nabantham "Navi" Pillai won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that Navi Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was honored for her "efforts to promote international peace and justice".

Jørgen Votna Friedens, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said today at a ceremony in Oslo that he paved the way for the creation of a "more comprehensive global legal order" and did so with extraordinary courage.

He said Ms Pillai held governments and leaders accountable for their actions and gave hope to victims.

Shirin Abadi and Narges Mohammadi are two Iranian human rights activists who received this award in previous years.

This is the 126th year of holding this prestigious award. In total, 287 candidates were nominated to receive this award, including 208 individuals and 79 organizations.
