Donald Trump's comments about Iran being able to "destroy" Los Angeles and San Diego drew a sharp response from officials in California and a sharp response from the White House. The White House says the US president meant that if he had not started a war against Iran, American cities would have been threatened.
Referring to the Iran war, Mr. Trump said at a midterm election rally in Nebraska: "It's a small price to pay for the security of the world and our country. They can destroy a city. Let them destroy Los Angeles, let them destroy San Diego."
When he said these words about the two California cities, some of the audience cheered him on.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, described these words as "insane and dangerous." Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, also called them a threat and an attempt to "encourage a ground attack on American lives."
