The Nobel Institute awarded this year's physics prize to Francis Halzen.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences named Mr. Halzen for his efficient service at the Icecube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin.
Mr. Halzen is a Belgian-American physicist born in 1944, who has conducted many studies in the field of elementary particles.
He is professor emeritus of the Hildale and Gregory Bright Chairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and director of the Institute for Fundamental Particle Physics at that university.
Mr. Holtzen is also the Principal Investigator of the Icecube neutrino observatory in Antarctica.
This observatory is considered the largest neutrino detector in the world and has been operating since 2010.
