The Pentagon has announced that it will execute the death sentence of a former major in the US Army by firing squad.

It would be the first military execution by firing squad since the end of World War II.

In 2009, Nidal Malik Hasan, a US Army major and medic, shot and killed 13 unarmed militant American soldiers and wounded 32 others at the Fort Hood base.

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon spokesman, announced on Monday on social media that Defense Secretary Pete Gast made this proposal and Donald Trump, the President of the United States, approved it.

Mr. Hasan was found guilty of 13 counts of first-degree murder and 32 counts of attempted murder by a jury of 13 officers, and that panel unanimously recommended his death sentence.

Mr Parnell said the time and place of the sentence would be determined. He wrote on Channel X: "The day of reckoning has finally arrived for Hassan." Nidal Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist from Virginia, killed 13 soldiers at a base in Texas in 2009 and later admitted in court to killing defenseless soldiers and apologized for "any injustice."
