Anujan Sivarasa, a 24-year-old Sri Lankan migrant worker in Saudi Arabia, is facing the death penalty for posting an article on Facebook that contained an insult to the Prophet of Islam in response to a religious dispute.
The story began after the widespread publication of a video of a young Muslim kicking a dog during a Hindu pilgrimage in Sri Lanka, followed by religious discussions and confrontations on social media. During these discussions, a user made an insulting comment about one of the Hindu gods, and Anujan also posted an article about the Prophet of Islam in response. He deleted the article and apologized for his statements, but the image of the post was given to his employer and the Saudi authorities, and he was arrested in July.
His case created a wave of concern in Sri Lanka and civil society organizations, political parties and the government of that country began diplomatic efforts to obtain his pardon.
Anujan's family has not received any new information about his condition for about a week. The date of execution of the sentence has not been announced, but Saudi Arabia has a history of executions without notifying the convict's family or embassy.
